Later that night I sat in my room on the bed, my mind refusing to shut down. I sat there thinking about all the fantasy books I read at Sip N’ Read. Not just the major ones like Harry Potter but all the fantasy novels where the orphan or the hero had a shitty childhood and then turns out to be the world’s only hope and of course the hero finds a group of ragtag people to join him and then they go on a crazy epic adventure before saving the world...yeah, I never thought I would be living in one of those stories and nothing about this shit was fun at all; I didn’t even fit the profile. I wasn’t an orphan, and yeah, I had some shit happen to me growing up, but it wasn’t a shitty childhood. I grew up without my father, but in my neighborhood the majority of the kids grew up without their fathers too. I was pulled from my head by a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I shouted across the room, without ever getting up from my spot on the bed.

“I brought you some of the lobster bisque and bread that you like so much since you didn’t really eat anything at dinner.”

I looked up to see Sylas standing in the door with a tray of food. It smelled wonderful.

“Thank you,” I said as I gestured for him to come in.

He walked over and set the tray on the small table next to my bed. He was quiet as he unloaded the tray; he turned to me handing me a glass of Pikinen juice. I enjoyed the cold sweetness of it as I drank almost half the glass. Sylas came and sat next to me on the bed,

“Are you okay?”

“No, I am not okay. I want to be angry, but at who? Destiny? Fate? Because it seems like one of them is really trying to force my hand. I mean...I guess I was still thinking about going back home...” I held up my hand to stop him from saying that Arcaccia was my home too, because I was starting to understand that.

“My other home, I meant. I know it seems silly to keep thinking about going to MIT to study the sea when,” I waved my hands to indicate I knew it was silly because here I was beneath the sea, “but it’s hard to let it go because at one point in my life going to MIT was the most important thing to me,” I stopped talking and stared at my hands.

“And now?” Sylas asked, bringing his hand under my chin to lift my face to meet his eyes.

“And now,” I let out a deep breath that I definitely knew I was holding, “it’s not.”

Sylas’ eyes widened a bit at my statement. I guess he was just as shocked to hear me say it as I was. He used his hand to caress my cheek and then he leaned in. I met him halfway, feeling his soft lips on mine.
